Cumulative Trauma

CUMULATIVE TRAUMA AND REPETITIVE STRESS INJURIES

A definition of Cumulative Trauma Disorders can be constructed by combining the seperate meaning of each word. Cumulative indicates that these injuries develop gradually over periods of weeks, months, or even years as a result of repeated stresses on a particular body part. The word trauma signifies the bodily injury from mechanical stresses. Disorders refers to physical ailments or abnormal conditions. The term CTD is generally used to describe disorders of the upper extremities; however, there are documented cases of "wear out" injuries to the joints in the lower limbs of the body.

Perhaps the best known occupational cumulative disorder is carpal tunnel syndrome, or "CTS," which is caused by compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel of the wrist. However, there are a variety of other work related conditions that can result from ergonomic hazards in the workplace.

Ergonomic hazards refer to physical stressors and workplace conditions that pose a risk of injury or illness to the musculoskeletal systme of the worker. Ergonomic hazards included repetitive and forceful motions, vibration, temperature extremes, and awkward postures that arise from: improperly designed workstations, tolls, and equipment; and improper work methods. The effects of ergonomic hazards may be amplified by extreme environmental conditions. In addition, ergonomic hazards may arise from such job related factors as excessive work rates, excessive work duration, imbalanced work-to-rest ratios, restriction of operator body movements, and confinement of the worker to a work station without adequate relief periods.
